From the Annals of Fire –  In 1881, the Texas State Capitol was destroyed by fire. The second Texas capitol was built in 1853, on the same site as the present capitol in Austin.  The fire accelerated already existing plans to replace it with the much larger structure that still serves as the Capitol.
