Big-time Plaintiffs’ attorney and political wannabe Tony Buzbee is running for mayor of Houston and already he is doing what he does best to win – suing people.  Buzbee claims that billboards with a public safety announcement for AlertHouston (which issues emergency alerts) featuring a photo of incumbent mayor Sylvester Turner are really an illegal campaign contribution allegedly paid for by Clear Channel in violation of Texas election law.  Although Buzbee claims he is not accepting campaign contributions, the lawsuit may be his way of funding the campaign as he is seeking damages of $5 million as well as attorney’s fees and injunctive relief.  Buzbee claims the billboards are campaign contributions disguised as “non-reported corporate ‘donations.’” Buzbee’s petition states:

“These billboards are directly meant to influence the outcome of this upcoming mayoral election by means of public advertising.  . . . The billboards are obviously aimed at gaining support for current mayor Sylvester Turner regarding the health and safety of the city.”

Stay tuned for further developments.

Chris Bell for Mayor

Red is endorsing Chris Bell for Mayor of Houston.  As this is Red’s first ever public endorsement, he does not make it lightly.  Chris has dedicated a good portion of his career to improving the lives of Texas citizens as a Houston City Council Member, a U.S. Congressman and an excellent attorney.  When elected, Chris will work for a more efficient and responsive government, equal rights for all, a cleaner environment, reductions in waste, increasing parks and greenspace, better public transportation and reducing congestion.  But above all, Chris is just a really bright, funny and engaging person who will be a tremendous representative for Houston throughout Texas, the U.S. and the World.  Please consider voting for Chris Bell for Mayor.

Quote for the Day

I believe in a balanced budget.”

“I’m not in D.C., I can’t tell you about the federal budget.”

State Rep. Sylvester Turner (D-Houston) explaining his support for a bill that passed the Texas House calling for a constitutional convention to consider a balanced budget amendment to the U.S. Constitution. And then turning around and proclaiming ignorance when asked what taxes should be raised or which federal programs should be cut to make the balanced budget a reality.

And he wants to be Mayor of Houston?

Who Isn’t Running for Mayor of Houston?

It might be easier to list those who aren’t interested in running the nation’s fourth largest city. The already crowded field for the Houston Mayoral election in November just got a bit more crowded when Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia announced his resignation and candidacy yesterday.  Garcia has high name recognition and an appeal to the burgeoning (yet lightly voting) Hispanic community.  He also carries the baggage of recent exposure of negligent operation of the Harris County Jail.

The field now includes:

Adrian Garcia – former Harris County Sheriff

Chris Bell – former U.S. Rep., Houston City Councilmember and Democratic candidate for Governor

Ben Hall  – former Houston City Attorney

Sylvester Turner – current State Rep. and former mayoral candidate

Stephen Costello – current Houston City Councilmember

Bill King – former Mayor of Kemah

Joe Ferreira  – retired United Airlines executive

The list of other potential candidates is still too long to post here.
