Quote for the Day

“Those changes are fine with me because I want to facilitate the continued functioning of the Travis County Republican Party.  However, I will continue to hold the bully pulpit and continue to hold political criminals of both parties accountable.”

Rob Morrow – Incoming Chair of the Travis County GOP commenting on changes to reduce the role and power of County Chair.

Lord knows there are enough political criminals to keep Morrow busy.

Red Calls the Copa America Centenario

Red will be watching a lot of soccer over the next few weeks with the Copa America Centario and the European Championship overlapping.  Here are Red’s picks for the CAC starting tonight:

Group Stage

Group A   – 1st Columbia; 2d USA

Group B   – 1st Brazil; 2d Ecuador

Group C  – 1st Mexico; 2d Uruguay

Group D – 1st Argentina, 2d Chile

Red doesn’t think that any of the CONCACAF teams other than the US and Mexico stand a chance to make it out of group play with the possible exception of Jamaica.  The Reggae Boys got a tough draw with Uruguay and Mexico in Group C.  They clearly  could make it out of a weak group like B.  And perhaps Haiti will surprise and knock off Ecuador for the second spot in Group B. Costa Rica might have had a chance but with ace goalkeeper Navas out it is a tough road.  The “match” of group play comes early with the Argentina-Chile pairing on June 6 in Santa Clara.  The match between the last two teams left standing in the tournament last year will be must see TV for all soccer fans.

Quarterfinals

Columbia 3 Ecuador 0

Argentina 1 Uruguay 0

USA 2 Brazil 2 (USA advances on PKs)

Mexico 2 Chile 1

A bit of a stretch to think that the US can beat Brazil but Brazil is playing with Neymar, Jr. (who decided to play in the Olympics) and this is not an outstanding Brazilian squad.  Argentina will be at full strength and has numerous weapons but is weak on the back line.  Columbia breezes by virtue of a relatively lucky draw.  And Mexico is fielding perhaps their strongest team ever with Javier Hernandez in good form joined by Peralta up front and a strong back line anchored by Layun and Marquez.

Semifinals

Argentina 3 USA 1

Mexico 2 Columbia 1

The US gets a bad draw here and suffers from not winning its group. Argentina should be the class of the field and Messi needs to prove that he can lead his team to something better than the usual second place finish.  Mexico gets a Columbian team that has an off form James Rodriguez and is missing their best defensive players from their remarkable 2014 World Cup Finals run.

Final

Argentina 2 Mexico 1

This could go either way but Los Albicelestes finally get a big trophy to put up on the mantel.

Today in Texas History – May 25

From the Annals of the Defeated  – – – The Texas Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy met for the first time.  According to the TDUDC, who are still referring to the Civil War as the “War Between the States”, their motto (on a five point star surrounding a cotton boll) is an ambitious “Love, Live, Pray, Think, Dare.”  The UDC was instrumental in the late 19th century  attempts to recharacterize the Civil War as not having been caused by slavery and in attempting to divert focus away from the rebellion that it was to a glorious cause dedicated to preserving a way of life that probably never really existed.

Your Annual Dose of Crazy – This Time with Extra Cheese

The Texas GOP platform is a thing of wonder – that is, it makes you wonder what planet these folks live on.  Charlie Pierce, one of Red’s favorites – listen to him on Only a Game on NPR – takes down the Texas GOP and takes them down hard.

Connoisseurs of American wingnuttery wait with great anticipation every four years for the release of the Texas Republican state platform. It is like Christmas morning. We wait for it the way America waited for that first cold beer on the evening of December 4, 1933. This is the real deal, the pure uncut hallucinogen of all American political ideology, the ultimate monster from the conservative Id. And this is not produced from some compound in Idaho. It is not stapled to a lamp post in downtown Coeur d’Alene. It is the official adopted philosophy of the Republican party in one of the most important states in the Union.

A Texan Responds to the NY Times

The New York Times recently published What Makes Texas Texas, and the article has received a lot of attention.  One Texan responds as follows:

I am a Texan. I was born in Texas and I grew up in Texas. I got my first pair of cowboy boots at the M. L. Leddy’s boot shop when I was 4.

I no longer live in Texas, and the Texas I read about and hear about does not seem like the Texas I knew. It does not seem like the Texas I keep close to my heart.

My Texas was the Texas of John Connally and Ann Richards. My Texas was the place where my grandfather, a windmill repairman and former ranch foreman, could wear a Stetson hat and cowboy boots and yet not believe in the death penalty or in the killing of animals for sport.

I am sad that I no longer recognize the Texas of today.

That Basketball Ring?

Sen. Ted Cruz (TP-Texas) attempted to capture some Indiana magic by appearing in the same basketball arena where the iconic movie Hoosiers was filmed.  But Cruz apparently is not very familiar with sports lexicon as he referred to the hoop as “that basketball ring.” That kind of flub in oral argument before a court of appeals would have his colleagues smirking.   CNN has the clip.

Back to Prison for Bernie Tiede

Bernie Tiede, the Carthage mortician who was convicted of killing wealthy widow Marjorie Nugent in 1996, will be heading back to prison after being resentenced by a jury on Friday.  Tiede, who was the subject of the hit movie Bernie by Texas film maker Richard Linklater, was temporarily out of prison awaiting a resentencing trial after a state district judge set aside his original sentence of life in prison in 2014.  The judge had determined that Tiede’s sentencing was unfair because evidence of sexual abuse that Tiede had allegedly suffered as a child was not allowed to be presented.

Tiede had been living in Austin in Linklater’s garage apartment during part of the time he was out of prison, but will now be incarcerated again.  The new sentencing jury was apparently swayed by testimony from Nugent’s estranged family who portrayed a different portrait of the manipulative misanthrope played by Shirley Maclaine in the movie.  The state presented evidence that Tiede enjoyed a lifestyle well beyond his means thanks to the company of older, wealthy widowed women, and that he killed Nugent when because he feared exposure of his mismanagement of her money. Tiede’s attorneys said he was the victim of Nugent’s emotional abuse and that his decision to kill her  was a result of that abuse triggering the memories of being assaulted by his uncle.  However, the uncle testified and denied that he had abused Tiede as a child.

After deliberating for only a few hours, the new jury sentenced Tiede to a sentence of 99 years to life.  Tiede will not be eligible for parole for another 13 years.  He he has already served almost 17 years for his crime.
