Today in Texas History – September 22

From the Annals of Maritime Engineering –  In 1922, President Warren G. Harding authorized the creation of a harbor in Corpus Christi Bay.  The need for a deep-water port for Corpus Christi was recognized after the Hurricane of September 14, 1919. Local business leaders realized that a deep-water port was a necessary to grow the local economy and sought federal approval. On September 14, 1926, seven years to the day after the devastating hurricane the new port was opened after completion of dredged channel through Corpus Christi Bay.  Today the Port of Corpus Christi is the fourth largest port in the U.S. in terms of total tonnage.

Today in Texas History – May 6

From the Annals of Hamburgers –   In 1999, Whataburger opened “Whataburger by the Bay” in Corpus Christi.  The restaurant is a tribute to founder Harmon Dobson featuring  – not surprisingly – views of Corpus Christi Bay and and a life-size bronze statue of Dobson by the entrance.  Dobson began in 1950 with a humble stand located on Ayers Street in Corpus Christi.  Dobson was killed in a plane crash in 1967 but his family continued the business.  Whataburger now has more than 700 locations from Arizona to Florida.  Red still remembers the first time his Dad took him to a Whataburger in Victoria. Dad had long talked about what a great hamburger they served and Red was pleased to confirm those reports for himself.

The Corpus Christi Caller-Times reports that a 27-year-old man has been arrested for stealing a life-size Miley Cyrus inflatable doll from an adult video (read porn) store. The doll was found in his backpack along with some marijuana when he was stopped on Wednesday for riding his bicycle the wrong way on a highway frontage road.

About 3:02 p.m. police saw the man rode his bike the wrong way near Interstate Highway 37 and Corn Products Road, according to a Corpus Christi police news release. The officer found marijuana in the man’s pockets. After the officer searched the man’s backpack, he found the life-size Cyrus doll.

The officer knew of a theft reported at an adult video store at 7430 Intestate Highway 37, a few minutes before he made the traffic stop, the release states. After investigation officers found the man matched the description of the person reported to have stolen the inflatable doll, which was estimated at $49.95.

Was that an officially licensed Miley Cyrus doll or a cheap Chinese knock-off?
