Fear Not! SB Nation has already begun it’s 128 team preview of – wait for it – all 128 FBS college football teams. And it starts with the worst team from last season – your University of North Texas Mean Green. For the UNT-MG diehards, Bill Connelly at SB Nation has a mind-numbing array of statistics and other metrics which explain in great detail exactly why your team sucked last season. He does provide the MG faithful with a small dash of hope in the hiring of head coach Seth Littrell – a Mike Leach protégée who has brought on former record-setting Texas Tech QB Graham Harrell to run the offense.

A&M Coaches Pressured Trainer to Clear Injured Players
Sports Illustrated reports that former Texas A&M trainer Karl Kapchinski claims that series of Aggie Football Head Coaches repeatedly pressured him to clear players to return to action when they were still recovering from injuries. This would likely not be news except that SI has a pretty good reputation for accurate reporting and . . . it is just so easy to believe – especially when some coach’s million dollar plus salary is on the line. Weigh all that money against the fact that some 20 year old who probably won’t play pro football might just have to limp for the rest of his life or suffer a debilitating brain injury, and Red guesses the decision is fairly easy for the less scrupulous of college coaches.
Kapchinski said there were times when he regretted clearing players under pressure from the coach because it resulted in players incurring additional injuries.
“There’s been a lot of great quality athletic trainers that have subsequently lost their jobs because they stood up for the players or were doing the right thing,” Kapchinski said.
Kapchinski worked at Texas A&M for 31 years after graduating from the school in 1979. He was fired suddenly in 2013 at age 56, and has filed a lawsuit against A&M claiming he was removed because of his age.
The San Antonio Raiders?

With Oakland seemingly licking up the scraps from the NFL Owner’s table, the fate of the Oakland Raiders is in doubt. When Raiders President Mark Davis visited San Antonio last year, many viewed it as a publicity stunt to show the league that the Raiders were serious about leaving Oakland and viewed San Antonio (wink, wink, nudge, nudge) as a possible destination. But yesterday, the Raiders were left sucking hind tit when the owner’s committee recommended that the Rams move back to LA and give the Chargers the option of being included in the deal. The committee also recommended that the league funnel $100 million towards the construction of a new stadium in Oakland. But $100 million is a drop in the bleachers under current stadium construction budgets which typically exceed $1 billion. The snub plus the fact that the Raiders have already purchased land in the San Antonio/Austin area, plus the fact that the Raiders would have a respectable temporary home in the AlamoDome are increasing speculation that the Raiders may be seriously considering a move to Texas. Red supports the idea as Texas is clearly large enough to support 3 NFL teams and anything that would eat into the Cowboys fan base (the Texans get little love in SA) is okay with Red.
Let’s Compare our NFL Teams
As readers know, Red complains every year about the Cowboys getting all the press and most significantly national TV exposure – while the Houston Texans languish in the media doldrums and typically receive only the obligatory 1 or 2 national TV games each season. So let’s look at the records of the two Texas teams over the last 14 years since the Texans arrived on the scene in 2002.
Overall Record: Texans are 97-127, Cowboys are 118-106.
Playoff Appearances: Texans 3, Cowboys 5.
Playoff Record: Texans 2-2, Cowboys 2-5. Neither team has advanced past second round.
Head to Head: Texans 1, Cowboys 2.
Okay, so Red has to admit that the Cowboys have the edge in all categories except percentage of playoff wins. But the overall edge is not that great and the overall win/loss numbers are skewed by two abhorrent seasons in which the Texans went 2-14 and fired the head coach. The difference clearly does not justify one team getting 10 national TV appearances this season and the other team getting 3 (including the late season flex to Sunday night of the Texans/Patriots game).
Meanwhile, the Cowboys Still Suck
The Cowboys lose to the hated rival OTNAs to finish the season at 4-12. How many national TV games will this floundering franchise get next season? Red puts the over/under at 9 and takes the over.
Texans Make the Playoffs
The Texans secured a playoff berth with a thorough dismantling of the hapless Jacksonville Jaguars today. Red’s favorite and awesomely named football player Whitney Mercilus had an outstanding day with 3.5 sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. We will see if the schedule allows Red to continue his streak of seeing every Texans playoff win. It’s an admittedly short streak of 2 games but a streak nonetheless.
Red Clearly Isn’t Paying Close Enough Attention
When did Scab Danny White become the color man for Cowboys’ radio broadcasts? Red rarely listens to a Cowboys broadcast but was in the car today and wondered who the pathetic excuse for a color commentator was – only to be surprised that it was Danny White – the one man primarily responsible for Red having giving up his 25 year love affair with the Cowboys.
Texas Bowl Games or More Correctly, Bowl Games to be Played in Texas
The College football Bowl schedule for Texas is now set. In addition to the national semi-final playoff game between Alabama and Michigan State at JerryWorld in Arlington (aka the Goodyear Cotton Bowl) on December 31, the overcrowded Bowl schedule includes the following soon to be classics:
December 26 –
Hyundai Sun Bowl at the Sun Bowl Stadium in El Paso: Miami vs. Washington State – featuring the return of former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach to Texas with the resurgent Cougars. 1 pm on CBS.
Zaxby’s Heart of Dallas Bowl at the Cotton Bowl Stadim in Dallas: Washington vs. Southern Miss – just to make sure that all major college teams from Washington get to play in Texas this year. 1:20 pm on ESPN. They didn’t want anyone to miss the kickoff at the Sun Bowl.
December 29
Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl at Amon G. Carter Stadium in Fort Worth: California vs. Air Force – a game sure to draw in thousands of fans, as in about 2000. 1 pm on ESPN
AdvoCare V100 Texas Bowl at NRG Stadium in Houston: LSU vs. Texas Tech – just to disappoint those looking for a Texas Tech/Texas A&M matchup. 8 p.m. on ESPN.
January 2
Valero Alamo Bowl at the AlamoDome in San Antonio: Oregon vs. TCU – which actually looks to be one of the more entertaining games on the undercard. 5:45 p.m. on ESPN.
In addition, several Texas teams will travel outside of the great state to end their seasons:
Baylor will face North Carolina in the Russell Athletic Bowl at the Orlando Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Florida on Dec. 29 (4:30 p.m. on ESPN)
Texas A&M will match up against Louisville in the Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee on December 30 (6:00 pm on ESPN).
Houston will try to finish 13-1 against Florida State in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Georgia on December 31 (11:00 a.m. on ESPN).
All time CST of course. Red will have his predictions later.
Texas High School Football Score of the Week
The Crowell Wildcats defeated the Garden City Bearcats 94-86 on Monday in a weather-postponed game. So if you had the under at 179, you lost! The two teams combined for an incredible 1339 yards of total offense – and that is on an 80 yard field playing 10 minute quarters.
Crowell kept its dream of a third consecutive state Class A Championship alive. The scoring started slowly with the game tied at 8-8 after the first quarter. Garden City led by 2 at halftime, but the Wildcats ran wild scoring 56 points in the second and third quarters. Garden City attempted a comeback of their own with a 40 point fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the powerful Crowell attack. The game wasn’t finally decided until Garden City failed to convert an onside kick with 49 seconds left.
Crowell will move on to the state semifinals against the 13-0 Borden Coyotes. The Wildcats lost to Borden 58-48 in the first game of the season, so Crowell will be looking to avenge their early season loss and return to the State Championship game. Somewhere, the ghost of Dick Todd is smiling.
